We appreciate your willingness to provide a recommendation for a student who looks up to you as a mentor and guide. Your friend wants to become a Freshman Mentoring peer mentor at BYU. President Worthen has asked the First-Year Experience Office to provide a peer mentor for every new student at BYU, and we in Freshman Mentoring take that responsibility very seriously. Peer mentoring is a highly demanding position, but it is also very rewarding, and the skills students develop have life-long applications.
As you know from your own experience of being a mentor, mentorship is a complex task, and it requires a certain kind of person. This application process helps us identify people who have the basic qualities we seek, of character, commitment, attitude, and so on, then we provide training and mentoring that enables them to build productive relationships with the students in their care and give them strong peer mentoring support during their first year at BYU.
